Can you make quality wine in Denmark?

Knowledge of Danish wine is not that great and there are still many people who are surprised that quality wine can be made in Denmark. If at some point you have tasted Danish wine of poor quality, you can easily get the impression that Danish wine is generally of poor quality. As of today this is definitely not the case.

As abroad where there can be a big difference in the quality of wines, there can also be a big difference in the quality of Danish produced wine. But today there are many producers who produce excellent wines. Several have even started producing international class wine. Many consumers have begun to open their eyes to Danish-produced wine, not least because Danish wine is largely produced according to sustainable methods. Today, a great deal of quality wine is produced in Denmark.

Make your own wine in the 60s and 70s

In the 1960's and 1970's it was very popular to buy a complete ‘make your own wine in three weeks’ kit. Many can probably remember how it sizzled and bubbled in the utility room at home. It wasn't a nice smell, and the taste of the finished wine wasn’t something to brag about. This is of course one of the reasons why many still perceive Danish wine as something that does not taste very good.

The importance of climate

The Danish climate is very suitable for growing fruit. When it comes to the cultivation of wine grapes, the choice of plants must be adapted to the northern European conditions with fewer hours of sunshine and lower temperatures. Mead, which is made from honey and herbs, has very good conditions in the Danish climate.

Commercial and recreational producers

There are around 100 commercial wine producers in Denmark and most of them have achieved a high level of professional expertise and produce high quality wine. There is an increasing interest in making wine on a hobby basis. Many hobby producers are gradually producing wine on par with commercial producers

Sustainable Danish quality wine

Every year, the Danish Wine Show is held where several hundred different Danish wines are judged by professional judges within the wine industry.

Danish produced cider has long been considered a quality product. Over the past 20 years, red wines and white wines have gotten better and better. In recent years, sparkling wine made from both grapes and fruit has been recognized as a Danish quality product. Most recently, Danish brewed mead has become an exciting Danish product.

There is a great focus on sustainable production of Danish wine. This applies to both the raw materials, the vinification, and the packaging. Another important element in connection with sustainability is the short transport route from producer to consumer.
